If you’re like me, and you like to research like crazy, you find new “fringe” health trends faster than the average-joe. However, even though I find them quickly, I still feel like the folks at the front lines of the trends found them way faster. Through Instagram, I found a few friends in the paleosphere that were hyping up Collagen Peptides. For a while, I didn’t pay much attention, but as I started to see benefits such as healing-the-gut, I started to do my research.

What is Collagen?

Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body, giving structure to our bones, hair, skin and nails. Over time, our body produces less and less collagen, resulting in aching joints, wrinkles, thinning hair and a slew of other ailments.

Collagen is a protein made up of essential amino-acids: glycine, proline, hydroxyproline, and arginine.

The two big brands out there (I use both interchangeably), Vital Proteins and Further Food, make many claims about what Collagen can do:

  • Glowing skin
  • Joint health
  • Bone strength
  • Improved digestion
  • Gut health
  • Better sleep
  • Anti-aging
  • Weight loss

So I set out on a mission to test those claims and see what differences I noticed (if any) from 30 straight days of collagen peptides.

Summary from 30 days:

Overall, I really started to notice some beneficial changes. My skin definitely became softer, especially on my arms. I often have Keratosis Pilaris, or “chicken skin” along the backs of my arms near my triceps, and within a week of using daily collagen peptides, that began to subside. By day 20, they were almost non-existent.

On day 5, I began to think my hair was looking more lustrous that usual, but I thought I might be imagining it. Turns out, I wasn’t. My hair really did start to get healthier and more shiny. My nails also grew like crazy. Normally, I would trim my nails once every few weeks, but during these 30 days, I had to trim them 3 different times!

My skin also looked like it was glowing more than normal. I didn’t notice a huge difference when it came to my under-eye circles, which is definitely something I was keeping my eyes (lol) on during this challenge.

My gut was up and down. One thing of note was that I did have more good days than bad days, which is something I can’t say for the last 6 months. But, there were still bad days in there, and some of them were pretty terrible.

The verdict:

I’m really happy with the results I saw using collagen peptides every day. It is an easy supplement to take, and I did notice positive changes, even small ones. My intent is to keep ingesting it every day to give the gut-healing powers a shot and to see if I can really start to reverse or pause some of the damage that chronic inflammation has caused. Stay tuned for a 60 day update!

For some fun reading, here are the notes I took every day during my challenge.

Day 1:

I started with just 1 scoop in a blend of matcha powder, hot water, and full-fat coconut milk. It tasted great! You can’t taste the collagen at all, and it mixed right in to my drink. I used an immersion blender for good measure to get my drink frothy and to make sure everything was combined before drinking.

To take stock on the beginning of my journey:

  • My nails were peely
  • My hair was a little frizzy due to new growth after experiencing some hair loss during a particularly rough flare from Crohn’s Disease.
  • My digestion was rough when I awoke that morning. Cramping, bloating and unsavory bathroom issues.

After drinking my matcha drink, within about an hour, my cramping died down and I had to use the bathroom less frequently. Not sure if that was just a placebo effect or not, but I was definitely paying attention.

Day 2:

My morning started out great. Minimal cramping and intestinal noise in the morning, and no diarrhea to speak of.

I made a smoothie for breakfast that consisted of baby kale, pineapple, berries, almond milk, matcha and 2 scoops of collagen peptides. I felt pretty normal throughout the day, and had a completely normal b.m. later in the evening. All around, I was feeling really good.

Day 3:

I woke up feeling good in the morning again, and had 1 of collagen peptides in my version of bulletproof coffee with coconut oil and grassfed butter, and another scoop in a smoothie with pineapple, banana, romaine, almond butter, almond milk and avocado. I ended up spilling the smoothie ALL OVER my car on the way to work, so I didn’t get to enjoy that concoction (which was a good thing, because it was pretty gross.)

I had some bloating later in the evening followed by some abdominal pain, but it died down a little bit after yoga.

Day 4:

I woke up bloated, but had a normal b.m. which was then subsequently followed by diarrhea.

I had 2 scoops of collagen peptides in my morning smoothie with berries, almond milk, maple syrup, and matcha. I started to feel much better later in the morning, and my appetite was HUGE all day. Is it the collagen that’s making me so hungry?

Day 5:

I put one scoop in my coffee in the morning with coconut oil and I had super high energy ALL DAY.

It was overall, a great day. I had very few symptoms. My hair did seem extra lustrous today. Perhaps I’m imagining it.

Day 6:

What a great day! I had one scoop in my coffee, and I felt amazing all day.

Day 7:

One week in!

I didn’t have my usual scoop in the morning, because I was helping my parents move super early, and didn’t have time to make coffee. But mid-day when I went to let the dog out, I made an iced matcha with 2 scoops of collagen peptides, coconut milk and lavender honey. (DELICIOUS)

I felt like my skin was super glowy all day, even after lifting heavy boxes back and forth between houses. The skin on my legs also felt more toned and tighter, but that could have been from the 7 days of straight yoga.

Overall, I had plenty of energy all day, and I was almost 100% symptom free!

Day 8:

Woke up and made a matcha drink with coconut milk, honey and 1 1/2 scoops collagen peptides.

Felt really great all day again. I also looked down and noticed how long my nails were. I trimmed them, and took stock to see how long it would take for me to trim them again.

Day 9:

My b.m.s were a little irregular, but for the most part, I felt really good. I was a little tired, but my appetite was definitely up. I had 2 scoops in my normal matcha drink.

Day 10:

Holy cow, what an amazing day. It was the first day in recent memory that I woke up with absolutely no intestinal noises or cramping in the morning. I was also up at 5:30 with no alarm and ready to conquer the day.

I made my matcha drink with 2 scoops of collagen peptides and went on to have a fantastic day.

Day 11:

Woke up with some cramping in the morning, so I decided to take an Epsom salt bath which helped a lot.

I then had 2 scoops in my normal matcha drink, and felt pretty good for the remainder of the day.

Day 12:

Today wasn’t the best day in the way of symptoms. I woke up with diarrhea, and by the end of the day was crampy, bloated and tired.

I had 2 scoops in my matcha drink in the morning.

Day 13:

It wasn’t a good morning again. I decided to have a smoothie with spinach, mango, banana, pineapple, 2 scoops collagen peptides, matcha and almond milk. The smoothie helped ease my digestion, but I did have diarrhea during the day. I felt much better in the evening.

I was even able to stay up way later than normal to see a friend’s band play at a local bar, which wasn’t something I could say I’d be up for in the past.

Day 14:

My nails were definitely longer and growing FAST. And for sure, without a doubt, my hair began to look shinier.

I had 2 scoops in my matcha drink in the morning, and felt INCREDIBLE all day with NO symptoms. 2 no-symptom days in a week?!

Day 15:

Halfway there!

Another great day! I had 2 scoops with my matcha drink and felt great all day with a lot of energy.

Day 16:

I was up super early this day, and felt a little sleepy, but for the most part, amazing all day again.

I had 2 scoops in my matcha drink.

Day 17:

Woke up feeling kind of “meh.” But the great thing was it was a work from home day since I had my follow-up with the doctor, so I got to relax and enjoy my matcha drink with 2 scoops of collagen peptides before my appointment.

The great news is that my iron levels showed that they were bouncing back from when I was severely anemic, so that was a great win!

Day 18:

Well, it turns out that not all days can be good. This was a pretty rough day. I woke up with bad cramping and diarrhea, and decided to give my digestive system a break with more of a soft-food/ liquid diet. I made 2 smoothies, one for breakfast and one for lunch, both with about a scoop and a half in addition to a banana, pineapple, ginger, turmeric and almond milk.

Started to feel better in the evening, so I had some coconut wraps (which were delicious.)

Day 19:

Still dealing with not feeling great on this day.

Cramping and bad bloating made for a pretty rough day all around. I had 1 scoop in a matcha drink.

Day 20:

10 days left!

Switched up the collagen from Vital Proteins to Further Food on this day, and had 2 scoops of collagen peptides in a smoothie with spirulina, matcha, almond milk, spinach, frozen berries, honey and ginger.

I decided to stick to a soft food/liquid diet for the day to help with feeling rough, so for lunch I also had another smoothie from Whole Foods, and used a Vital Proteins single serve packet.

I also had bone broth later in the day which has collagen in it.

Day 21:

Still wasn’t feeling 100%, but I definitely started to come around later in the day.

I had 2 scoops of collagen peptides in my matcha drink, and that actually kept me full most of the day.

Trimmed my nails yet again!

Day 22:

Woke up feeling much better and had a fantastic day.

I put 1 scoop in my matcha, and it kept me full until about 2pm!

Day 23:

What a great day! High energy and overall a wonderful day.

2 scoops in matcha!

Day 24:

I worked all day, and had a packed of Vital Proteins single serve collagen peptides in my smoothie.

I traveled that night and felt really good! Had a super light dinner and woke up the next day feeling great.

Day 25:

In Toronto for vacation! Woke up feeling amazing!

Had a Vital Proteins single serve in my coffee in the morning, and really felt great all day.

Day 26:

Vacation day 2! Collagen peptides in my coffee. Felt energized and full most of the day.

Almost no symptoms!!

Day 27:

Vacation day 3. Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides Snack Bar for breakfast. DELICIOUS!

Another great day! Spent the day exploring the city and walked over 17,000 steps. Felt energized the entire day.

Day 28:

Vacation day 4. Collagen Peptides in my Tim Hortons coffee.

Spent the day exploring and felt amazing. Wedding that night and was awake and energized until 2AM!

Day 29:

Vacation day 5. Collagen in my coffee.

Felt great again, even though we were travelling all day. Took a nice nap on the plane.

Day 30:

THE FINAL DAY!

Collagen peptides in my matcha drink. Finally home from vacation, and feeling a little rough today. Perhaps it’s America that makes me feel like crap.
